Snuggle Puppy by Sandra Boynton. This author is a preschool parents dream, short and easy to read melodic books with illustrations to die for. The story is simply a little love song about all the ways the dog loves the puppy, simple and touching. As an educator something I love is that the dogs don’t have an obvious race , they don’t even have an obvious gender which is perfect. Regardless of who loves who in your family your child can see you in the dog and themselves in the puppy! I think that is the perfect valentine! My son didn’t warm up to this book right away, but now not only does he love it he is very very specific that only I can read it to him . It’s become a big favorite in our house.

Mama, Do You Love Me?
by Barbara M. Joosse is a well loved book. I have read it many times but never reviewed it. There are a lot of books about children testing their mom’s unconditional love but this one stands out for me. In it the little girl seems to go out of her way to aggravate her mom and really test her love. The mother is fantastic because she isn’t gushy or sickeningly sweet, she says she would get angry , worried, sad depending on what her daughter tests her with. However after each honest answer she follows it up with how she will always love her. Kids need to know even if they make us sad or angry it doesn’t change the depth of our love for them.

Did I Tell You I Love You Today? by Deloris Jordan is a very practical yet heartwarming look at all the ways parents show love to their children everyday, from feeding them healthy food to praying after they go to bed. My son loved all the big boy things in the book like, the school bus, basketball and the playground. I teared up reading the book, but I cry at American Idol so that may not be indicative of anything!

I love you stinky face

I Love You Stinky Face by Lisa McCourt is a wonderful mushy book that will still appeal to kids that aren’t so into mush. A little boy in his PJs asks his mom if she will still love him even if he was a series of terrible monsters. It reminds me of “The Runaway Bunny” but less saccharine and creepy. Sorry if I have just called your favorite book creepy but I’ve never been a fan of “The Runaway Bunny”. Back to this book and why I like it, I love that the little boy in the book keeps trying to find ways to make him unlovable and the mom keeps finding ways to love unconditionally. There is a deeper meaning here and moms will see past the fun illustrations to the real heart of this book, which is no matter what we love our children. When I found this in a thrift store and read it quickly, I couldn’t look at my son in his stroller throwing puffs on the floor without tearing up.

Love You Forever by Robert Munsch is perhaps the classic tear jerking picture book. I read this for years and years to children and had no problem getting choked up, it never bothered me, then I gave birth and I can’t read it without sobbing. The premise is simple, a mom sings this simple song to her son as he grows ” I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you for always, as long as you’re living , my baby you’ll be.” until she can’t sing it anymore and it’s his turn. For days after I read this I tear up as I lay my son in his crib. * Edited to add that many readers have commented that they do not like this book at all! What do you think? Leave a comment and tell us!

The I LOVE YOU Book Kids need to know that love is unconditional and this book drives that point home is a simple , bright and funny way. I cried through reading most of it , but my son laughed and loved it. I specifically loved that the author includes that a child is loved even when they are sad, not sleeping and more. The cover of the book has a cut out heart shape and would be a great add on to a shape activity about hearts.

DIY Candy Bouquet

This bouquet won’t wilt after a week , if it lasts that long! The idea of a candy bouquet isn’t new but when I was at the dollar store I wanted to see if I could make it with stuff I found there for a fun and frugal centerpiece .  The total cost was $4 ! Not bad.  For a simpler Valentine’s Day craft, just make the candy flowers and hand them out to friends.

  1. Gather your materials. You will need some white card stock ( we used paper plates), Valentine’s themed lollipops, a glass vase, florist foam, some red tissue paper, heart stickers ( or self adhesive foam hearts) , red and pink crayons , a marker and scissors.Candy Bouquet
  2. Draw some outlines of flowers on your card stock.Candy Bouquet
  3. Have your favorite little one color them for you.  I should have taken a video, he was narrating to “other kids mommies” how to do this step.  Candy Bouquet
  4. While they do that  cover the florist foam with red tissue paper and pop in the vase. I just tucked it in , didn’t even tape it.Candy Bouquet
  5. Cut the flowers out. Candy Bouquet
  6. Poke holes in the middle of the flowers. Candy Bouquet
  7. Thread the lollipop through. Ours have twist ties on them and I used them to hold the flower in place.Candy Bouquet
  8. Pop the lollipops in the foam.
  9. Add stickers to the vase.Candy Bouquet

A healthier twist: If you don’t want candy you can do this craft with Valentine themed pencils. It would be a cute gift to a teacher , I know when I was teaching I was forever running out of pencils.

Valentine's Day Craft

It’s a month away! Get your love shaking with this musical Valentine’s day craft.  There is nothing my son loves more than music ( well maybe garbage trucks) and any craft that can be used for something besides decorating your fridge is a huge plus in my book.  The novelty of the peek a boo window made this an even bigger hit!  Have fun, shake it and make some music !

  1. Gather your materials. You will need 2 paper plates, red paint, a sponge brush or roller ( helps the paint dry faster so you can play with it faster too!), some jingle bells, some pom poms , a zip lock bag, packing tape or a stapler, scissors and glitter glue.Valentine's Day Craft
  2. Start by drawing a heart on the inside of one plate.Valentine's Day Craft
  3. Paint the outsides of both plates.Valentine's Day Craft
  4. Add glitter if you want!Valentine's Day Craft
  5. Let dry. We patted ours dry with a paper towel so we could keep going.
  6. Cut zip lock so that one layer covers the heart opening. Tape well.Valentine's Day Craft
  7. Pop the pom poms and jingle bells in the plate. Valentine's Day Craft
  8. Tape the top to the bottom. We used packing tape because I can’t find my stapler . If you are stapling it make sure that the staples are close together so that no jingle bells fall out. * Also if you have young ones that are  still popping little things in their mouths try ripped pieces of paper instead of pom poms, and dry rice! Books

Valentine's Day by Anne Rockwell

Valentine’s Day by Anne Rockwell and Lizzy Rockwell is a lovely book with a a cute twist. The story follows a class making special valentines for each other , some are very touching others goofy. The story doesn’t reveal who the Valentine’s are for. There are pictures of the same girl with the various students though so after a while you are clued into that they are for her we still don’t know why. I was so worried she was sick in the hospital, as it turns out the class goes to the post office to send it away to a classmate that is far far away! I like the idea of a class all writing to a friend far away, focusing on friendship and not candy! I also love any book that causes my son to say ” Let’s go see a map of where she lives mama!”

happy-valentines-day-dolores

Happy Valentine’s Day, Dolores by Barbara Samuels is hilarious. If you are a younger sister, or older sister you will relate to this book. My son didn’t really get it but loved the illustrations especially the one of Dolores in music class. Here is the run down of the story; Dolores snoops in her older sister’s room. They fight about it and she stops, until she can’t take it anymore. Before Valentine’s Day she sneaks in and finds a necklace in her sister’s drawer.  She ends up wearing it and loosing it and going to hilarious lengths to get a new one before her sister notices it’s gone.  I applaud the author for having her fake a veterinary emergency with ketchup! Very funny , cute book but geared more to the 4-6 year old group.

I lost my Kisses

I Lost My Kisses by Trudie Trewin is cute story about a little cow who has lost her kisses! She looks everywhere for them, gives wonderful descriptions of what kisses are, sound and feel like but she just can’t find them. The thing is , is that she is picking her daddy up at the airport and has to give him a kiss when he arrives! Luckily her heart find them when she sees her daddy.  My son loved this book, he is an affectionate kid and loves to tease us that he is “all out of kisses” so this book was right up his alley! Very cute and I love the mostly black and white illustrations by Nick Bland.

Laundry Basket Sail Boat

Pretend play activities that combine imaginative play with  crafts are our favorite things to do lately.  Also our supplies are made up of many recycled and reusable  materials. This can be done with boxes, wagons pretty much anything your child can sit in! When they are pretending go along with their suggestions and let them lead. It’s your turn to ask “Why?” and follow along.  Most of all have fun.

  1. Gather your materials. We are using a laundry basket, some party streamers,  a wrapping paper tube, some painters tape, pipe cleaners, a paper grocery bag,  sticky back foam, markers and scissors.
  2. Start by having your child decorate the mast of the sail ( aka the wrapping paper tube) with markers and foam.Laundry Basket Sail Boat
  3. While they are doing that , draw a sail on the inside of the grocery bag. Laundry Basket Sail Boat
  4. Fold and cut two layers ( so the inside is facing out ) of sail.
  5. Decorate the sail with markers and foam. Laundry Basket Sail Boat
  6. Tape the sail to the mast. I am using painters tape because my son likes the blue. Any tape will work. Laundry Basket Sail Boat
  7. Decorate the boat. We weaved the party streamers in and out of the little holes on the sides of our basket.Laundry Basket Sail Boat I didn’t want anything sticky in the basket since my laundry does sometimes get put in it. Laundry Basket Sail Boat
  8. Attach the mast. I am using pipe cleaners wrapped around the tube and tied to the basket. Like I said above I didn’t want sticky tape residue on my basket. If you are using a box no biggie but this worked for us. I covered the sharp edges with painters tape which also won’t leave a residue. Laundry Basket Sail Boat
  9. All Aboard! We played ferry boat, and the drink you see was part of our pretend play. I had to be the lady in the ferry cafeteria and make him a drink before he got back in his Honda and we docked.  Hey it got some banana into him too !Laundry Basket Sail Boat

Winter Sensory Tub

Sensory tables and tubs ( or lasagna pans like we used this time) are a fun experience for toddlers and preschoolers to learn a myriad of things. Simply scooping and pouring the contents of a sensory table will help develop hand eye coordination, as well as the basic concepts of measurement but as your child grows there are easy ways to turn your basic sensory fun a step further to keep them learning.

  1. Gather your materials. We used packing peanuts, blue pom poms, small pieces of silver ribbon and tiny snowflakes. We also used over sized clothes pins to use as “pinchers”.Winter Sensory Tub
  2. For younger children simply mix and explore. Feel the different textures, scoop with big spoons or measuring cups and pour. Winter Sensory Tub
  3. For older kids introduce the clothes pin , choose things to pinch or just let your little one loose. My son pretended he was a crane working on a snowy Winter Sensory Tub construction site and picked up all the blue pom poms.  Little does he know he was giving those fine motor skills and hand eye coordination a darn good work out!
  4. There is no right and wrong way to do this , have fun and  use what you have!Winter Sensory Tub

Books

A_Really_good_snowman

A Really Good Snowmanby Daniel J. Mahoney plucked my heartstrings and then some. This is a story of a annoying little sister who always finds ways to ruin her older brother’s fun, and his avoidance of her . He’s just an average big brother, and when she tags along to a snowman building competition he ditches her for his friends. When some bullies tease his little sister , he does what every mother hopes their older child does and stands up for her. Then seeing he needs her he leaves his friends and joins her snowman building efforts.  It’s a sweet story but not so sweet it’s unrealistic. Also the illustrations of all the different snowmen will make you laugh , my favorite is the Elvis snowman!

Snowman in Paradise

Snowman in Paradise by Michael Roberts is genius. There I said it. I very rarely think that of books. I like the majority of books I read and think there are so many good ones to share but I don’t want to return this one to the library, I want to keep it! The book is about a snowman from Manhattan who is glum after Christmas and wants to go on a vacation too. A magical bluebird grants his wish and he flies first class to a tropical island , with the only rule being he needs to come back in time for Christmas next year. This book is written like the traditional “Night Before Christmas” and although I thought the copy would be too long for my son at first , I was so wrong. The rhymes are unique , my favorite being :

In May after splashing with buckets of paint, He threw down his brush, saying, “Gauguin I ain’t.”

Even if some references are more for the adults reading it than the children listening , both parties will close the book smiling and wanting to start all over again.  Grab it and see why I love it so much!
