Being prepared for school means getting enough sleep, having a full belly, homework in their folders, permission slips signed, and a lunch box that actually makes it on to the bus!
I can honestly say that there was more than a few days when last year when I dropped the ball on one or two of these. I want to teach my children responsibility but I also want to set them up for success. Creating this drop zone is a great way to stay organized and teach my kids responsibility too.
Sleep and food are not a problem for us but going to school hungry is a real issue for many kids. Last week I shared that as a Quaker Classroom Ambassador, I’m inviting you to join Quaker in supporting teachers nationwide. From July 7 to Sept. 30, purchase specially -marked Quaker products and enter the unique package codes online at www.QuakerUpForClassrooms.com. For every code entered online, Quaker will donate $1 to AdoptAClassroom.org up to $250,000 (minimum donation of $150,000) to help fuel classrooms across the country. Plus, you’ll get a coupon for $1 off Quaker products. Learn more at www.QuakerUpForClassrooms.com.
Signed permission slips, keeping homework organized, and making sure lunch boxes are on the bus with my son are not always givens. His bus comes before 7:30am can you blame me? It’s going to be different this year. I prepped this insanely simple drop zone and we will use it too!
There are 3 simple parts to our drop zone :
1. Hook for backpacks. They come home and go here- they stay here until they are put back on to go out the door the next day.
2. Bin for lunchboxes. After I make lunches in the morning they go in here. No more ” Did you leave it in the fridge? Is it on the counter?” it’s in the red bin. After school it goes back in there and I empty the scraps and pop the cold pack back in the freezer. Kids don’t touch it until it’s time to dash out the door.
3. Tray for homework. All notices and homework folders go in here. I will look through them and know what needs to be done.
I will never be a super organized person, it’s just not who I am, but a little help goes a long way!

My favorite high school teacher was my Latin professor. He was easy to get off topic, but the things he chose to talk about while off topic (politics, history, farming, money) were also learning opportunities for us students, although we didn’t realize it at the time. He knew that we were learning, but we didn’t; we just thought it was a fun game.

My mom was my Kindergarten teacher and I will never forget my Kindy days. I don’t think we really remember too much from when we were five but I have some very vivid memories from that year. I thought it was so cool my Mom was my teacher and how lucky the other kids were to have her too. I was not too fond of being told I couldn’t call her Mom in class though :0

I was a K teacher for 8 years, and now that my son is going to Pre-K I am amazed at the feelings that come as a parent sending your child to school with a “stranger” and trusting them to keep them safe and teach them too! I was overcome with emotion as I thought of how all of my K parents must have felt, and it gave me an even better understanding of how important teachers are! After my twin girls are in school I plan to go back to teaching, it is my passion! #QuakerUp #SweepsEntry

I had the best kindergarden teacher ever! She was understanding, compassionate, and had a beautiful voice. My first grade teacher not so much. When I started in to first grade, it was around the time that my little sister made her appearance. I did not adjust well. I wanted to stay home with Mom and Baby instead of going to 1st grade with my scary teacher. Insert my kindergarden teacher. She would let me come down to her room in the mornings for a bit and listen to her sing for a while. Once I was calm and relaxed, I’d head back to my 1st grade classroom and adjust to being away from Mom and Baby all day 🙂

My favorite teacher was my 4th Grade teacher, Mrs. Higgins. She taught me it was perfectly fine to be myself, even if other kids thought I was a nerd. She let me do extra projects, she never spoke down to me, she always let me read what I wanted after I finished my assignments. She was awesome! #QuakerUp #SweepsEntry

My 8th grade English teacher brought out my passion for writing and I am thankful to her for that. In 8th grade we had a period where we got to choose electives and I was going to choose something ‘easy’ that would take little to no effort like computers and be with my friends but my English teacher suggested I take her creative writing elective class instead. I was hesitant because I really didn’t want the extra work nor did I enjoy writing that much but she really pushed me to sign up and to try it since she thought I had a talent for writing given my essays/assignments in her class. I took her advice and am thankful I did. That class helped me realize my passion for writing and storytelling which I still have to this day.

My favorite teacher is my mom. She is my hero. She is a nurse by trade, but when my dad passed away and my brother and I were little, she retired from nursing and went into teaching. It was so she could spend more time with us. I personally feel she was busier as a teacher than nurse though. She taught medical courses at the local high school. She taught her students and me about the value of a good education. She taught us gratitude. She taught us giving back to those fortunate. I saw her by shoes for a student who could afford them but needed tennis shoes to be in the class. She provided immediate care to many of her students in medical emergencies. She did so many amazing things as a teacher while being a single mother. She is an amazing teacher and I will forever be blessed and humbled to call her mom. #QuakerUp #SweepsEntry
