Finding fun ways to motivate children to develop their fine motor skills and their math skills all at once can be tricky but this simple Pre-K math activity is a cinch to set up, and kids love it. Not only are they building important skills like subitizing and pre-writing fine motor skills, they also get to take home a bracelet or perhaps a new magic wand! It’s up to them what they turn this into.

Gather your materials. You will need some pony beads, pipe cleaners, and a die.
Show your students how to roll the dice, then count and bead that many pony beads onto their pipe cleaner.
You can play this as a game, but during free choice or center time, I have found it lasts longer if it’s individual. Using big trays like these works best in a classroom.
You will see your students count. They will also be practicing the skill of subitizing ( recognizing amounts on dice, tally marks, and fingers without counting) and of course the fine motor development while beading.
