To share the knowledge I have acquired working with preschoolers and their parents for more than 10 years .

To provide an accessible resource for parents and teachers filled with multi level, easy to follow , and fun activities for young children.

To support these activities with books, songs and play.

To add some fun and learning to your day at home, or some new activities to your classroom.

To promote the importance of early childhood education at home and at school.

To ditch the flash cards !

Thank you! I have been an early childhood educator for over 20 years and I am continually challenged by parents that think their young children will benefit from the use of flash card, NOT! Kids are hands on learners! Love your website!

  • Lori Nicholas:

I am reading this and trying to understand what is wrong with flash cards if that is how my child enjoys learning. My oldest daughter begs to sit down and work w/ fc’s. She enjoys other methods as well but she prefers flash cards. Is there something I should know about why that is a problem? Just wondering?

    Thank you, Lori

If she enjoys them no do not take them away but flash cards used in the classic way ( drilling) is not an appropriate method of learning for typical young kids. It doesn’t foster a deep connection with the materials and is too static to spark anything more than rote memorization. That said playing games with them, using them for children with communication issues and other disabilities is of course fine.

Have you ever read “Einstein didn’t use Flash Cards? ” if not grab it it will explain this further.

  • What a great website! Looks like a wonderful resource for grandparents, too.
I have a book that my grandchildren love that I would like to share with you.
“Henry’s Life as a Tulip Bulb – Developing an Attitude of Gratitude.”
Please allow me to share a few links to introduce you to Henry.

    book review… http://www.hkgilbert.com/viewblog.php?id=50

There is also a short video on YouTube about Henry… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fUXu7Cy1_GM

and… he has his own website … http://www.henrythetulipbulb.com …with photos of his elementary school visits.

Henry even has a facebook page http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/groups/135867756892/

I think this book would be a wonderful addition to your book list with it’s colorful illustrations and inspirational message for young and old alike.

    Thank you,
    JoAnne
