Summer Reading Bucket List

Summer Reading Bucket List

The school year is almost over and if you are like me you have already started planning your family calendar for the whole season. Before you declare all the planning done take some time and plan your summer reading adventure!

Summer reading isn’t just for fun it’s the best way to prevent summer slide. Did you know that it’s estimated that teachers spend on average 4-6 weeks re-teaching material children have forgotten over the summer? Think of all the time that teachers could have for other things if we send our kids ready to learn new material instead of reviewing and re-learning . My kids and I brainstormed fun, silly and educational ideas for summer reading and came up with this bucket list. Follow the links to book recommendations .

Summer Reading Challenge & MeMeTales Readathon

We are in week 2 of our 3rd annual Summer Reading Challenge and have great news to share . So far we have read almost 5 thousand books! Submit your weekly tally here .

The other news is that MeMeTales along with PBSKids is launching their Readathon this week.  I know what you are thinking Readathon but I am already doing the Summer Reading Challenge can I do both?

Yes and without anything extra, you can use the free books from MeMeTales in your tally here just like any other book you read . The great thing about MeMeTales is that they have a fantastic eReader app and the books are electronic.  I say this is great because let’s face it in the summer some kids decide they will only do fun things, that learning is on hold and books don’t always appeal to them. Put a book on a computer , smartphone or tablet and reluctant readers jump on board. That is MeMeTales goal to fight the summer slide and help kids keep learning all summer .

So for 6 weeks MeMeTales will release one book free for Readathon participants but that isn’t all they are doing, they have also teamed up with FoodforEducation.org and for every child signed up for the Readathon they will send one hungry child to school with a full belly ready to learn.

Check out all the Readathon details and download the MeMeTales app  here and don’t forget to get your summer reading tally for our Summer Reading Challenge here.
