Worms are fun. We dig for real ones in the backyard, make them for lunch ( pasta ones) and even paint with them ( pasta ones again! ). I love this activity because it’s easy, different and with older children you can challenge them to paint specific shapes, or letters using only the pasta. It can also be used as an example of before and after, talk about the process of cooking and what happens to the pasta when it’s cooked.
- Gather your materials. You will need some spaghetti, a pot, some paint , a plate and some paper.
- Cook your spaghetti. Let cool but don’t wait too long it will get too stiff to paint with.
- Add some paint to your plate .
- Dip your wiggly worm in
- Print onto your paper.
- Add more colors if you wish
- Let dry.

This might be a silly question, but what kind of paint is good to use? I just went and got a ton of craft stuff since my almost three year old is a craft fanatic, but I couldn't find decent seeming paint at the dollar store – looking for suggestions, I'm sure she'd love this craft!

ROTFLOL!!!! Youngest (11 yrs.) and I are home from church because we are sick and this was just what we needed! We LOVED it! We may have to try the pasta painting this next week during school. I agree with Tara, Diary of a Worm would be great with this! When I saw this, it reminded me of a great resource from the from the University of Illinois on Herman the Worm:

I love that you use pretend worms and not real worms! Ive seen real worms used and its not a good way to teach respect for nature! Thanks for a great idea!

We’ve started using string instead of spaghetti for this and have had lots of messy fun 🙂 We had to stop using food in messy play after my kids started refusing to eat things for dinner that they’d been told not to put in their mouths at their playgroup’s messy play. They couldn’t understand the difference between pasta covered in paint and pasta covered in sauce 🙂
