Storytelling is an important piece of the literacy puzzle. Of all the benefits of encouraging your children to tell and write stories, I think the most amazing one is to connect them with their creativity. They then take an idea, develop it, and then create something the can share. Showing children that they can create is incredibly powerful. It proves that they can be as creative as they want with no limits. The freedom that they feel when their creativity is not stifled helps them grow immensely.
As they get older, they can master their creativity. Of course, there are so many side lessons from storytelling. You can learn spelling, story elements, comprehension, character development, and even public speaking. Working with my children as they have grown is eye-opening. The changes in how they develop a story as they’ve gone from toddler to school-aged are impressive. Here are 20 storytelling activities for children, including two of my favorite tools for storytelling – puppets and pretend play!
