When my daughter and I found these pink and purple whisks at the store today we knew they would be leaving with us but we weren’t sure yet what we were going to use them for. A few aisles later we were sure whatever we did do it would involve bubbles. Whisking bubbles is a classic Montessori activity although we have spun it a little with the bubbles at the start and whisking in color. We also added glitter and the whisks were princess whisks but that was just our interpretation of it. My daughter had a blast as you will see…
Gather your materials. You will need a bin that holds water, some dish soap ( I have done this with baby shampoo with my son who had extremely sensitive skin as a tot), some food color, whisks, glitter( optional) and some fun cups for the glitter and later for scooping and pouring.
Start by filling your bin with water and add in the soap.
Add some food color and mix! She loved how the bubbles would froth.
Time for some glitter. First pour it in the cup then add it in and mix some more.
I must have taken 100 pictures sitting back and watching her play.
After a long while she ditched the whisks and put as much of her body into the bin as she could fit. Thank goodness she was wearing her favorite new pink shoes, I think they were the only barrier stopping her from getting in the bin completely.

Where did you get that neat glitter dispenser?

We did this activity today and it was a major hit. My 3 year old played on the kitchen floor for an hour. The only addition we made was turning off the lights at the end and putting flashlights up against our bin (which was clear). That extended her play for at least another 20 minutes. Thanks so much for the great idea!

Love your adaptation!

I’ve always wondered about using food coloring. Couldn’t it stain if they got on their clothes?
Allison McDonald says
It can. If you are using clothes that can’t get stained I would use water color paint in the water instead.

is this fine for a 20 month old? looks so fun!
Allison McDonald says
I would do it with a smaller tub and makes sure the bubbles are tear free – use baby shampoo and no color.

I don’t know what I did wrong, but it didn’t look like the picture. I used dish soap and food coloring but it didn’t get a lot of bubbles. My almost five year old got bored pretty quickly and kept asking “what do I do?” and got all upset b/c she got food coloring on her hands. Sigh. Maybe she’s too old for this one. I’ll keep this activity in mind for when my baby gets a little older.

Some soaps just don’t froth as well when you whisk – I don’t think you did anything wrong, not every activity will appeal to every child.
