Letter of the week is something I struggle with because while I love doing letter crafts and taking a little time out to focus on one letter I really don’t follow the traditional view of letter of the week curriculum, and don’t think you should either.
Instead of focusing so much energy on only one letter children should learn in context and letters work together not all by themselves! If you are going to do letter of the week the best way to do it is carve out a small chunk of your day and make one of these letter crafts and maybe spend a little extra time noticing that letter with the aid of one or two other activities that focus on that letter. The rest of the time focus on letters working together, focus on letter sounds, and on the whole alphabet.
Below you will find a post of every letter of the alphabet with letter crafts for it, activities that fit the letter theme, and of course, whole alphabet activities like reading alphabet books ( click that to read our favorites). Click on the title below the letter collage to be taken to the specific letter collection. Choose a few of these for each letter and remember to focus on the whole alphabet and on meaningful literacy experiences. If your child loves making crafts this is a great option but if they are more about exploration than product start with our Alphabet For Starters series. My daughter wasn’t interested in letter crafts so I didn’t push them we did this instead.

Hello, I really love your philosophy and all your great ideas for preschoolers. I have been a preschool teacher for 25 + years , with a background in art education. I am teaching at a Catholic school and now being told to follow a specific Curriculum . It includes Religion, Math, Science, Social Studies, and more. I do know these subjects are important but it is amazing how the curriculum for young children is being pushed down. Very Academic in my opinion. I was wondering your thoughts about this.

Over the years I have become more and more convinced that a well thought out environment with ample free choice activities and following each child’s interests is the best option. A very structured curriculum doesn’t serve early childhood education well at all, but reality is that many teachers are forced to use one. So ultimately I think learning how to differentiate is where we should be focusing our energies. If you can take the standards and turn it into play that would be great!

Love this! Is there any easy way to print off all of the images of your ideas? (Without individually downloading them?) I’d love to have a “cheat sheet” with all of your photos printed off, and then be able to come back to your site for more info!
