We are celebrating a new book release from the creator of Goodnight Moon thanks to our sponsor HarperCollins and what better way to celebrate a book than by encouraging new parents to read to their baby with a book-themed gift? Make bedtime reading even better with this great new book.
Did you know that one of the greatest predictors of school success is how often a child is read to at home? Did you know it’s never too early to start? And one of the tips I give parents when I speak about literacy is that when you include reading into your bedtime routine you are less likely to push it off until “later” and never get it done. Reading is so important and that is one reason I was excited to put this book-themed gift together with this fabulous new bedtime book from Margaret Wise Brown.
Ready to make a wonderful gift? It’s so easy but it’s also so meaningful.
This never before published bedtime book from beloved author Margaret Wise Brown doesn’t disappoint. Good Day, Good Night, like so many of her other books, is melodic and, has a sense of slowing down near the end as children are settling in and getting sleepy. Together with Loren Long’s gorgeous illustrations, the sweet world of this little bunny comes to life and invites you in. This is the perfect gift for a baby, the book can grow with and be a really special part of their bedtime reading routine. Check out the trailer here!
Now this book is not new, to me, and likely not to you either. Goodnight Moon is a book that many of you probably had read to you. Or maybe like me you know it off by heart because you read it so often to your own baby? Plus the Clement Hurd illustrations are truly classic. But you know what IS new? A padded book edition that just released. It’s perfect for baby hands to grasp!
Here is a picture of my husband and my son ( who is now 11) at bedtime when he was 6 months old reading Goodnight Moon. A lot has changed but that “baby” read two chapter books today while he was home sick from school. He has always been a fantastic reader and it is in large part because of our bedtime reading routine.
Ok so grab these books, and you’ll want something soft and snuggly to cuddle with like a blanket and this Goodnight Moon bunny from Kids Preferred.
Last but not least print out this bookmark. I created it just for this gift and included some of my best tips for reading with your baby.
Print it out ( click here for it) Cut, laminate, and punch a hole at the top. Loop some bakers string or ribbon and voila! You can also print out the fFree Good Day, Good Night Activity booklet here for older kids!
The perfect gift to give with the hope that every baby will get a great start reading with great books while snuggled up with people who love them.

MY ALL TIME FAVORITE HAS ALWAYS BEEN “GOODNIGHT MOON”…I taught elementary school for 36 years and used the format of the book to teach patterning for writing lessons to my lst and 2nd graders. Now, an Auntie who loves to read to her pre-school nieces and nephews and anyone else who loves to listen!
Graciela Gonzalez-Hernandez says
My oldest son had “Goodnight Moon” as his absolute favorite, plus “The Little Engine that Could”. My second daughter loved “Guess how much I love you?”. My last two love “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”. Those moments right before bedtime with each one of them have been my most treasured times.

My son and I enjoyed reading Good Night Gorilla. Simple text with a lot to share through the pictures. It was one book he loved to read again and again. And one of the first books where he started to copy me in pointing and naming things in the book. I forgot about that until now.

My son’s favorite bedtime book right now is I Love You Through and Through by Bernadette Rossetti-Shustak. He absolutely loves being read to and turning pages. He will make me read the same so many times in a row before he goes to sleep. 🙂
Marcia N. says
My favorite bedtime book is The Going to Bed Book by Sandra Boynton although I still love Goodnight Moon as much as I did when I was a child.
Heather Bradley says
We also love the Going to Bed Book. Sandra Boynton has prime shelf space in our home.

We don’t have one regular bedtime book, so we read whichever book the kids pick. We did go through a phase when my 2-year-old had to have goodnight moon read to him before he went to sleep every time. And he’d need to find the mouse in every colored picture. 🙂

I have six children, and each of them has had a different favorite, but one of my favorites that each child enjoyed, is Good Night, Gorilla by Peggy Rathmann. In this almost wordless book, the sneaky little gorilla gets the best of the zookeeper, releasing all of the zoo animals to return to the zookeepers house for the night. They all eventually get caught – or do they? As children get a bit older, they can search for the balloon on every page as it floats away from gorilla’s friend, mouse. This book will make child and parent chuckle.

We love Goodnight Moon and sorely need a new copy (ours is fraying at the binding). Some other bedtime favorites: Maisy’s Bedtime, It’s Time to Go to Sleep, and How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight?
Thanks!

How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight is on our wishlist for Christmas. My 3yo is obsessed with dinosaurs!

My 3 year old son loves Kids Goodnight. He copies the sound of the wind blowing outside and the rain splattering on the window. We’ve not read Goodnight Moon yet, but it’s on our Santa wishlist

“The Family Book” by Todd Parr. This book is cute and simple yet, teaches kids not every family looks the same but, they all love each other. My three year old wants to read it again and again.
Julie Simmons says
My favorite bedtime book is
The Going to Bed Book by Sandra Boynton. Simple text, fun rhymes, and great illustrations make it still one of my 3 year olds favorites.
Rheena says
My eldest son can recite from memory the book Goodnight Moon. It’s one of our favorites along with others like Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site, (Sherri Duskey Rinker), the Going to bed book (Sandra Boynton) and A House in the Woods (Inga Moore).

My kids like “The Going to Bed Book” by Sandra Boynton

Goodnight Moon has always been my favorite bedtime book as well as the favorite of my, now grown, children. It was published the year before I was born and I’m now about ready to be the old lady in the story. Although my grandson likes the story, he prefers the touchable pictures in Good Morning, Good Night.
Sarah Weber says
We love “Guess How Much I Love You?” The close relationship between the rabbits that comes through in the text really hits a soft spot for me. Goodnight Moon is great, and being a transplanted Oregonian I also love “Goodnight Oregon” as I want my kids to be exposed to the wonderful state I grew up in – and there are more places in the book than I can take them to when we go to visit.

Our favorite bedtime story is Good Night, My Little Sleepyhead by Linda Barnes.
Beth says
Good Night Moon has always been a family favorite, but I LOVE The Runaway Bunny
it offers beautiful illustrations as well as great language. The Big Red Barn is another one that I love and often give as a baby gift because I think it gets overlooked, plus it provides the opportunity to make animal sounds. Margaret Wise Brown books are timeless! I have a heightened appreciation for these books as I’m a Speech Language Pathologist and look at children’s book with a very critical eye.
Mariah Mercer says
I love love love reading “The Monster at the End of This Book†– funny, fun and a great read!
Terri Mercer says
It was a really hard choice, but my favorite was “I Love You Foreverâ€
