This letter matching activity is deceptively simple. While it is a cinch to set up and not too challenging for most preschoolers and kindergarteners working on matching upper and lowercase letters, the activity packs a punch. Not only do children have to recognize the lowercase letter and search for the matching uppercase letter but they must peel the sticker backing off which also works their fine motor skills.
I spend a lot of time working with matching upper and lowercase letters because children must know their lowercase letters to be ready for reading. Many children have strong letter recognition with uppercase letters, and I use that ability to scaffold learning lowercase letters. Many toys and craft supplies ( like the stickers in this activity) are found only in uppercase, so I like to use them in activities like this that help strengthen student’s letter recognition of both.
The best part of this letter matching activity is I got EVERYTHING I needed for it at the dollar store. Win!
Here is how I made it.
Letter Matching Activity
Gather your materials. You’ll need some sentence strips ( but any card stock will do), foam letter stickers, a sharpie, and scissors.
Start by writing out the lowercase letters on the cut sentence strips.
Set out with the stickers and invite little ones to come and match the letters up.
Stickers are such a rad tool for fine motor development, and they don’t feel like work to your students, so it’s a win-win!
For children who are ready to go to the next step, you can always differentiate the activity and use sight words!
