Since the Coronavirus pandemic shut down my preschool and much of the world, it’s hard to remember what day it is or what special events are coming up. Did you know Earth Day is right around the corner? Honestly, It snuck up on me too. Typically at preschool, we read some books about taking care of the Earth, talk about recycling, and have a few lessons about what we can and can’t recycle. This year isn’t typical. This year as teachers, we need to think about activities our parents can do with their kids at home without overwhelming them. We need to think about simple activities that won’t cause frustration that is close to the surface now than before. We need to consider limited materials too. When I teach about Earth Day, I try to focus on the three Rs – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Using what we have for new things is probably my favorite R to focus on because not only is it good for the environment, it is also a lesson in problem-solving, and requires children to tap into their creativity! These Earth Day activities for preschoolers focus on the three Rs and help teach our children and students how to be better stewards of the Earth.
