This post is in partnership with ChildCare Education Institute.
Finding good professional development is tough for early childhood educators and home child care providers, which is why I love ChildCare Education Institute and its course offerings. This week I took some time of teaching and put on my student hat to learn more about coping with trauma, disasters, and emergencies. As early childhood educators, we must be prepared for any emergency in our classrooms as well as for dealing with the after-effects of disasters and trauma. The thing about trauma is that you don’t always see it, children who have experienced homelessness, abuse, food insecurity, loss of a loved, or even the uncertainty with the current COVID-19 pandemic aren’t always easy to identify. This is why it’s up to teachers to be prepared to recognize trauma, handle emergencies in ways to mitigate traumatic experiences and have the know-how to support children and families who have been through trauma.
I am preparing now for an increase in students who have families in crisis. I hope my preparation is for nothing, and none of my students or their families face traumatic events during the COVID-19 pandemic. Still, it’s my responsibility to prepare in case they do. This is why I am thrilled to share with you that ChildCare Education Institute is offering ADM107: Coping With Crises and Traumatic Events as a free course to all early childhood professionals as a special promotion during these unprecedented times (May 1-31, 2020).

Basics about this course:
- Covers best practices, strategies, and resources to help children and families recover and cope after an
emergency, disaster, or traumatic event. - Talks about how to reduce the impact of traumatic events on children, families, and center facilities.
- Beginner-level course and takes three hours to complete.
- No additional texts required for the course and like all CCEI courses, the class can be started or stopped at
any time and is accessible 24/7 /365 from any device. - Doesn’t require an active CCEI membership.
My experience with the course, yes, I took it before suggesting it to you.
What I loved about this course:
- The focus on how to help children after a crisis, what behaviors to expect in different age groups, and how to respond to questions and concerns.
- The focus on supporting families through all kinds of crises, both ones affecting the whole community and family level crises.
- That they focused on the need for teachers and providers to seek help when needed.
- How easy it was to start and stop as I helped my children with their own distance learning.

- Supporting Children and Families Who Have Experienced Trauma ( SOC110) – I am taking this course right now and think it’s a perfect next step after ADM107: Coping With Crises and Traumatic Events. The course is incredible, the sources, just like every other CCEI course, are up to date, and credible and the topic is thoroughly explored.
- Promoting Empathy and Other Pro-Social Behaviors ( SOC104)- this is the next course I am going to tackle. I’m so thankful the courses are so flexible because with a house full of family in quarantine, I never really know when I’ll get a good chunk of alone time to learn.
More About ChildCare Education Institute
ChildCare Education Institute® provides high-quality, online training courses and programs, applicable to those who work in early childhood education and childcare, in classrooms and other programs. There are so many classes to choose from, in both English and Spanish. CCEI also has online certification programs that provide the coursework requirement for national credentials. The best part is that you can earn your required credits from the comfort of your couch – which is particularly awesome during social distancing but super convenient no matter what. What I love is that I can access it on my phone or iPad too. Right now, in many homes, people are sharing devices for distance learning, but with CCEI, I can still access my learning no matter what. There are 30 hours of new content added every year, making the courses current and relevant to issues facing teachers. New users are eligible for a free trial course that changes each month.
