Whether you read these books to your kids, or they read them to you, they will eat them up! These are the books series my children could not put down during kindergarten and even into first grade. Some of these series like Ballet Cat and Elephant and Piggie are great for new readers to attempt independently while Nancy Drew and A-Z Mysteries are fun to read with parents or as a group in class. Reading development has a little different timeline, there is no reason to stress if your child isn’t reading independently in kindergarten, keep finding fun things to read and making time to read with them. Princess In Black by Shannon Hale and Dean Hale. I am not a fan of boring princesses, and either is my daughter, which is good because Princess Magnolia is anything but boring and she is not your average princess. These books are fun and my daughter never let me read only a few chapters, so make sure you have time to read the whole book if you start.
Nancy Drew & The Clue Crew by Carolyn Keene this was the hit of the summer. Both of my kids liked these books and even though my daughter is going into first grade she is very young for her grade and many kindergarteners will enjoy this series with its totally kid appropriate “crimes”.
Ricky Ricotta’s Mighty Robot by Dav Pilkey This series is so good when I read the first book with my son he asked for the next, eventually I had to go to bed and but luckily for him I was sent the first 4 books in the series so he could read them all in one sitting, which is exactly what he did. He was in 2nd grade at the time; the books are perfect for the kindergarten – 3rd-grade readers.
A-Z Mysteries by Ron Roy is one of the author’s many series that absolutely captivate kids. My son has read so many of these books and my daughter started reading them with my husband or me this year too. They are filled with smart kind main characters, and fun mysteries too.
Ballet Cat by Bob Shea I am in love with this new series. My daughter adores it and she can read the books independently which is such a huge confidence boost. They remind me of Elephant & Piggie books both in how they are laid out with speech bubbles, as well as the witty, and sometimes more lowbrow humor kids love.
Elephant & Piggie by Mo Willems I am STILL in denial that there won’t be anymore Elephant & Piggie books, but I am just so happy that I get to listen to my daughter read them to me, I really do think they are even funnier when you read them with your child reading one part and you reading the other. The text is written in speech bubbles, so it’s easy to assign parts. I am usually Elephant ( and any special guests) and my daughter is Piggie.
Which book series do your kids adore? Tell me about it here in comments or on my Facebook Page!
