I’m taking off my preschool teacher hat and popping on my mom of a 9-year-old hat for this post. Today I want to share some awesome craft kits for school-age kids. Crafts are not just about busy work for kids stuck at home during COVID-19. They are calming for anxious kids, unlock creativity for children who just don’t know where to start, build confidence, and fine motor skills. Since the shutdown began, I have been gifted a friendship bracelet, a hair bow made from duct tape, a rainbow loom bracelet, and Molly is sewing me something as I type this. Craft kits are great right now because we need alone time, I need time when I am not hovering over my kids asking to see their remote school work is handed in, and they need time away from me too. Kits allow my daughter a chance to be independent and learn something on her own. Crafts have been a lifesaver for us during the quarantine, and I hope this list of craft kits for school-age kids, offers you some ideas for your family too.

Rainbow Loom
If you have a teenager, you probably remember the rainbow loom craze about ten years ago. They aren’t as popular now, but they are still super fun to create with. My daughter has been making a ton of bracelets with this exact kit. She is sending one to her teacher today! Buy it here.
No-Sew Quilting Kit
This project is not entirely done at our house yet, but it’s a great option to do as a family. Snuggle up with Netflix, and craft! Buy it here.
Friendship Bracelet Kit
This has been one of the most used kits in our house for a few years. The foam guides are awesome, and I may use this more than my daughter even. I take it on planes to make bracelets as I watch in-flight movies. The kit comes with everything you need, and I like that it all packs back inside its case when you are done. Buy it here.
Soap Making Kit
This was such a fun kit because it has a lot of room for creativity, and yes, the soap really does work after you make it. While the odor never bothered anyone at my house, my dad did mention it when he was visiting once, so if you are very sensitive to scents, you might want to choose a different kit. Buy it here.
Clay Charms Kit
You may not know that you need a taco charm, but trust me when your child gifts you one, it becomes the only thing you need. These charms are adorable, and seeing my daughter so proud of her creations was the best part. Buy it here.
Duct Tape Crafts Kit
This kit is so much fun and frankly pretty functional too. Thanks to it, we have a bunch of things. Of course, my daughter went rogue and made herself a shirt and flip flops, which were not part of the kit, but isn’t that the best part? The creative ideas that come from our children after the kits help them learn the basics? If you do get this kit, you might want to grab a few extra rolls of duct tape in funky designs. Buy it here.
Lego Chain Reactions
I am not sure if we ever owned this Lego kit, but we have given it as birthday gifts many, many times. The Lego klutz kits are high quality, and kids really can do them with very little adult help. Many years ago, we reviewed one here. Buy it here.
Sew Mini Treats
I don’t know what so cute mini-treat is being made for me right now, but this kit is presently spread out over my daughter’s floor as she sews me something! I’m so excited. In the past, we have made fried eggs with it and more. You can see it in action in this post I wrote for Scholastic. Buy it here.
