Ladybug Craft for Toddlers & Preschoolers

I am finally updating this ladybug craft for toddlers and preschoolers after almost 20 years. In those years, I have used this bug craft countless times. In my Prek classroom, I use this ladybug craft to help teach math concepts – yes, I’m serious. We talk about the idea of numbers being equal as well as the concept of symmetry while creating this ladybug craft.

How to make a ladybug with a paper plate!

  1. Gather your materials. You will need black construction paper, a paper plate, red paint, glue, scissors, and a pipe cleaner.
  2. Have your child paint the underside of the paper plate. We chose to finger paint, and if you look close at my son’s lips, he taste-tested the paint, too.
  3. While your child is painting, use black construction paper to make ahead.
  4. Cut out some spots. and thin rectangles. I used a paper punch for the spots but you can draw circles and simply cut them out.
  5. Glue your head and spots on .
  6. Poke two small holes in the head and thread the pipe cleaner through.

The Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle is more than a cute book about a crabby bug. The Ladybug is eager for a fight. Each hour, she encounters increasingly larger animals to challenge, until a whale accidentally slaps her! I enjoyed using this book to teach students how to tell time, as each page features a picture of an analog clock. I would use a play clock and, as I read each page, invite a child to come up and set our classroom clock accordingly. Additionally, don’t be discouraged by the fact that the ladybug tries to start confrontations; no animal accepts her challenge. This can lead to a valuable lesson about not giving in to those who are trying to provoke a fight.

I Love Bugs! by Philemon Sturges is a rare find. Although it’s categorized as fiction, I consider it nonfiction. This is a fantastic factual book about bugs designed for older toddlers and young preschoolers. It’s challenging to find simple, short books that include facts, but this one is perfect. While it doesn’t delve into the life cycles of butterflies or explain how lightning bugs illuminate, it features descriptive language paired with bright and charming illustrations. It’s great for children under three and is also useful for older kids!
