Sensory tubs gives children opportunities for learning so many things, not just making a mess. The one that I see most often with the 3-year-olds I work with and thinking back to my own children is storytelling. Storytelling is a natural side effect of exploring with their senses. I love hearing all the different stories my students create as they fill cups with dried beans, splash figurines into the chilly water, or squish colors of gelatin together. Are some of these messy? Yes, some are, but while we immediately see the mess as a problem with our adult eyes, children just see it as exploration. Find a place where kids can get messy, send home requests for extra clothes the day before… reserve it for a warm day and do it outside. Just find a way to explore these great sensory activities!
