Summer reading is essential, and I know many of us want to turn our brains off during the summer especially if we teach all school year and want to relax with our families, but reading is critical. That is why I started making these summer reading calendars as a way to help teachers encourage families to read all summer long without too much pressure. If this is too daunting for your students, download our summer reading bucket list instead.
If we want children to be good readers, they need to SEE themselves as readers, and the only way that happens is to get books in their hands. This year I have made the calendars more diverse asking parents and caregivers to seek out more books that will spark discussions. I want to challenge you to search for more culturally diverse books, to create a more inclusive bookshelf, and consider what is missing from your current one. This isn’t my way of shaming you or making you feel like you aren’t doing enough, I am just hoping to expand everyone’s experience. I have tried to balance all kinds of topics but ultimately these are just suggestions. On the resource page linked below, I have suggested picture book titles for every prompt.
Each day you will find a fun and thoughtful prompt which you can use to inspire your reading for the day. Click the link below to download the free summer reading prompts.
