Rubber Band Resist – Preschool Process Art

Simple process art is a cornerstone of a good preschool program, and finding new materials to introduce to your art table during free choice is a great way to re-ignite your students’ interest. This process art project has wide and flexible boundaries. Children can add as many or as few rubber bands as they want and make all kinds of shapes. As they add the rubber bands, they are working on vital skills. Hand strength, hand-eye coordination, and other fine motor skills get a great workout with this activity. Then painting inside the lines, the rubberbands create offers even more time for these skills to develop. Small canvases dry quickly, so these could be sent home the same day!

Gather your materials. You will need some small canvases, watercolors, paintbrushes, and rubber bands.

Start by placing the rubber bands on the canvas. We did stripes to start with.

Now it’s time to paint.

The sky is the limit here.

I love how vibrant these paints are. They turn this basic preschool process art into something amazing!

Now let dry.

For our second canvas, we added rubber bands in all kinds of directions.

It’s tricky to paint the small areas, but that’s good!

Let dry. Remove the rubber bands, and voila!
