Need a new letter sound activity for your literacy center in the new year? This printable letter sound activity is an excellent choice for a small group letter sound activity or your literacy center. The printables are easy to print out and then tape onto Duplo. Our PreK class focuses on discerning and matching sounds while gently introducing letter-sound connections. Students love finding the matches, and I like that you can match the letters along with the sounds or focus only on the sounds. There are 32 matching letter-sound pairs because I’ve included all vowel sounds and the soft c and g sounds.
Gather your materials. You will need the printables, some Duplo, tape, and scissors. Note that after downloading the printable, make sure that you use the default setting for scale when you print. This will result in the squares fitting Duplo perfectly.
I spent a lot of time getting this right, but every printer is different. I suggest printing one page in black and white to test it, so you don’t waste color printer ink!
The printable includes words and images. I only include the pictures in my class because we are focusing on the sounds and matching them. I included the words, so you know what every image is, but also if you want to have the students match up the letters.
Cut and tape to the Duplo. Check out Goodwill and Buy Nothing Groups if you don’t have Duplo. Unlike regular Lego, Duplo is easier to find for cheap second hand. I am using the same colors of block for the sounds. This gives my students a little scaffold for finding the right match. I will have more than one pair of the same color with most of my students, but if they are stuck, I can say, well, we know it’s a red block. Let’s find both red blocks and see which one matches!
Now it’s time to match up. I love using these base plates to keep everything nice and together. Start with a handful of sounds with one half of the pair on the plate or tray if you don’t have a baseplate and the rest loose.
Let’s see if we can find the match, we need to say the words out loud and try to match up the first sound in each word.
After doing this activity as a small group or teacher table activity, move it to your literacy center during free choice and give children the chance to play with it independently.
