One of the things I am really trying to promote in my PreK class right now is the process of making art and how it’s ok if we don’t know how it’s going to look before we make it. Art is a process, and while we use crafts in our class, we focus much more time, and attention on art and the experience of creating something—these collage hearts are part of that effort. Many of my students have been enjoying making valentines for family. We made a paper hug and explored hearts both with science and as a shape this month. This is a free-choice art exploration. In my class, this heart art project would be offered during a free-choice time, usually at least two days in a row, for children to decide to make if they want. What I like about this is there is no group instruction. I want children to explore this independently or with a friend or two. When we do art as a group, children often look at what others are doing, and some have a more challenging time engaging in the process worrying about doing it “right.” I have some examples of how collage hearts may look in this post, but when I put this out for my students, there will be no samples. Samples are not helpful for process art like this, where children do not need instruction on a technique. Creativity takes opportunity and time to come to light, so be patient and help a frustrated child but let them explore the materials as they are inspired to.
Heart Art Project for Preschool
Gather your materials. The only thing you absolutely have to have for this is some cardboard, scissors, and glue. After that, it’s up to you. I like using whatever I have on hand. What do you have lots of in your supply closet? Use that. I have felt, glitter hearts, foam, buttons, beads, and various ribbons.
Start by drawing a heart on your cardboard.
Cut out.
Add glue.
Collage.
There is no wrong way to create this.
You can layer.
Or keep it simple! Let dry.
