Winter is such a fun season to learn about, but teaching after the holidays can be tiresome. January feels like a really long month, but I am here to help. One of my favorite circle time activities for preschool is my Ten On The Sled circle time lesson, and it’s inspired me to put together more activities for this awesome book. I have Ten On A Sled activities for your literacy center, sensory area, and circle time. Most of these preschool activities are printables but they aren’t worksheets. I like to use clip card activities at small groups to really target my student’s individual learning, but they work great at free choice or center time too! I hope you and your students enjoy these Ten on The Sled activities as much as we do!

The Book
If you aren’t familiar with Ten On The Sled by Kim Norman, illustrated by Liza Woodruff, it is, simply put, a must-have book that uses fun rhymes and alliteration to revamp the old tune of Ten In A Bed. Arctic animals all pile on a sled and as they speed down the icy slope each one gets booted off the sled with a unique and descriptive verb. I like that it combines math and literacy, but I love that it captivates all groups of children, from very young to elementary-aged kids too. It is a complete blast to read aloud.

After reading this story, explore the actual habitat, many of these animals live in with this arctic ice sensory activity. The water and ice together make for the perfect habitat welcoming animals from Ten On The Sled like seals, walruses, arctic foxes, moose, polar bears, and more.
Ten On The Sled Rhyming Clip Cards
Rhyming clip cards are a staple in my literacy center and my students like using them independently. However, the first time I put a new batch of rhyming cards out for exploring, I always go over what all the pictures are. In this pack there is a hare not a rabbit, and a cariboo not a buck. Remember that these are all the animals from Ten On The Sled! Download these rhyming clip cards for free here.
