I was shocked that I didn’t already have a book list for books about spiders, but this is why I really only use these 5 preschool spider books over and over. I love them and the important lessons they teach. Finding spider books that are not at all scary is important, and I have to say this short but useful list of spider books for pre-k and preschool do the trick! I hope you and your students love these spider books for preschool as much as I do!

I’m Trying To Love Spiders My students thoroughly enjoyed this book by Bethany Barton. It’s an educational book that presents numerous facts about spiders, but what really sets it apart is the narration. The narrator, unfortunately, has a habit of squishing spiders. As we read page after page, I would ask my students if they think the narrator should squish the spider, and they would always respond with a resounding “NO!” The book does an excellent job of teaching children about the positive aspects of spiders and encourages them to advocate for the spiders’ well-being since they are essential for pest control. I believe this book would be ideal for read-aloud for children aged four and above, and younger preschoolers could enjoy it at home with a parent or guardian.
The Very Busy Spider by Eric Carle This book quickly became a favorite of my son’s. when he was a toddler. We had the board book version which features a raised spider web, adding a sensory aspect to the story. Students in class enjoy it just as much without being able to touch every page. The Very Busy Spider teaches children about the value of hard work and determination while also reinforcing animal sounds. It’s an ideal read for toddlers.
Doreen Cronin’s Diary of a Spider is a clever and humorous book that older preschoolers are sure to enjoy. The book’s main message is that spiders aren’t all bad and that they have fears just like everyone else. This is an important lesson for children who may feel ashamed or embarrassed to share their own fears.
The book Walter’s Wonderful Web by Tim Hopgood is an adorable story about a young spider named Walter. He struggles to create a web that is both strong and beautiful, despite his best efforts. Walter creates webs in various amazing shapes, but they all turn out to be weak. This book is not only about spiders but also about shapes, making it an enjoyable read for all. Even those who are squeamish will find the story endearing.
Aaaarrgghh Spider! by Lydia Monks This book is both funny and insightful, with a great message for young readers. It tells the story of a spider who desperately wants to become a family pet, but ends up causing chaos for the family she hopes to join. Despite her efforts, she never quite achieves her goal, but in the process, she and the family come to a better understanding of each other. Through humor, the book helps kids confront their fear of spiders. Your students are sure to enjoy it!
