This Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Lesson Plan is perfect for teachers who teach at schools or homeschool parents. Nursery rhymes are familiar to children and let young children really play with words as they recite and sing them. I encourage you all to sing a lot with your kiddos at school or at home, it’s a wonderful and easy literacy activity. This nursery rhyme lesson plan is packed with shapes, shared writing, name recognition and spelling, and a little counting too. If you need some star-themed projects check out this link.
Preparing The Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Lesson
Gather your materials. You will need the printable pack, one extra sheet of paper, scissors, a pencil, and markers. Glitter glue and buttons are optional. Trays are so useful for activities at this age, you can use cookies sheets or buy the ones I use in my classroom here with this affiliate link –> Preschool Trays.
Start by printing out the printable pack here. <– click on this see the pdf and print.
Cut out the shape and number cards.
Printable Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Lyrics
Pop the nursery rhyme printable on the wall with the painter’s tape or use what you have. Make it visible so that your child will see that the words on the paper are the words you are reciting. Learning that text translates to oral language is foundational for literacy. In every one of these lesson packets I create, I try hard to balance various areas of learning but reading and reciting the nursery rhyme is a must.
Show your child the printable and ask them what they think the rhyme might be about. Use the pictures for clues.
Recite it together. I always sing it with actions to get a little gross motor development in today too!
This Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Lesson Plan – Shape Hunt
These shape cards can be used for simple matching, but I think kids stuck at home really need to be moving as much as possible. So Let’s turn them into a shape hunt and match.
Hide one half of each pair around your home.
Place the other half in a central place and make that home base.
Start the search by calling out a shape and sending your child out to find its match.
Star Name Recognition and Spelling
Gather your materials: you will need to print out the sheet of stars, the extra piece of paper, glue, and glitter glue/ markers. You may need to print out multiple copies because you need one star for each letter of your child’s name.
Cut the stars out and write the letters of your child’s name on the stars. Only use an uppercase letter for the first letter. The rest should be lowercase.
The objective of this activity is for your child to learn the letters and spelling of their name.
But first a little art! Have your child decorate each letter to their liking and then together glue the stars in order on the extra sheet of paper. Squeezing these little glitter glue bottles are great for developing grip strength!
Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Preschool Activities
I don’t expect children in early childhood settings, including kindergarten, to be writing independently, although if they are, that’s great. Children develop at their own pace. This activity was created to have some special time together and for you to model writing as the child dictates. Before you start writing, talk to your child for a little while about wishes. Talk about how some people like to wish on stars, that wishes are like hopes you have for yourself and others.
Then ask your child to think of what they wish for. This is not the time for correcting your child if they wish for something material. Instead, write exactly what they say. Ask them why they wish for that and write that down. You can ask them if they have any other wishes and write that answer too. Feel free to grab a blank piece of paper and have them draw a picture also. When it’s all done, read it back to your child.
If your child is willing and able, please encourage them to write.
