Learning to rhyme isn’t a singular skill; it involves many steps, from exposure to rhymes to recognizing that words rhyme, deciphering or choosing between rhyming and non-rhyming words, and eventually creating pairs of rhyming words from scratch. Most PreK and kindergarten students are usually somewhere in the recognizing/deciphering stage at this part of the year. This little Halloween rhyming game is perfect for a small group activity. It’s easy to use for assessment as they play, and not hard to differentiate as needed.
Printable Halloween Rhyming Game
Gather your materials. You will need these Halloween clip cards, some scissors, a laminator if you want, and either some clothespins or something fun to mark your choice. I used these foam pumpkins with my students.
Print out and cut out the cards. Grab the printable for just $1.99 here.
Place them on a tray. I did this in small groups, which is simply during y free choices time, and I call over ( usually they hover and come over on their own) 1-2 students to play. In this case, I did this in pairs.
This is definitely a rhyming game that needs a teacher to play the first time; you need to be able to say the correct words for each image or the rhymes may not happen. If the children think the broom is a bat or the perfume is poison … you get what I mean. We took turns and then repeated the process so every child did every card.
You can also use this Halloween rhyming game as clip cards with clothespins … I just decided not to laminate and use the foam pumpkins instead.
After every student participated, they took over and played with this rhyming activity independently.
