Today we are taking you on a fun Backyard Bug Adventure that’s going to include everything and anything about…. You got it! Bugs!
Bugs Bugs and more Bugs!
This activity is pretty simple, but fun none the less!
- Gather your Materials. In this case you need a kid, some boots, and a backyard or park with bugs. However, if you have an older child you can make a small backyard bug adventure notebook and draw pictures of what you find .
- So, go outside and get dirty, look for anything creepy and crawly, look under big rocks or pavers. When you find something tell your child about it, let them touch and feel and watch the bug move.
- Have older children record your finds in the notebook, but the younger ones can have fun wiggling like a bug or just playing in the mud!
- When you get back inside talk about what you found, what the bugs were like and ask your child what their favorite discovery was. Recounting an event is an important skill for literacy.
Backyard Bug Adventure Song
Herman the Worm
Sittin’ on a fence post chomping on my gum
(chomp chomp chomp)
Playing with my yo-yo
woo woo
When along came Herman the worm
And he was THIS big
I said, “Herman WHAT happened?”
And he said, “I ate my sister!”
The next 3 verses substitute in brother, mother, and father.
The final verse is as follows:
Sittin’ on a fence post chomping on my gum
(chomp chomp chomp)
Playing with my yo-yo
woo woo
When along came Herman the worm
And he was this tiny
I said, “Herman what happened?”
And he said, “I burped.”
