Summer reading is essential, and I know many of us want to turn our brains off during the summer especially if we teach all school year and want to relax with our families, but reading is critical. That is why I started making these summer reading calendars as a way to help teachers encourage families to read all summer long without too much pressure. If this is too daunting for your students, download our summer reading bucket list instead.
The reality is that if we want children to be good readers, they need to SEE themselves as readers, and the only way that happens is to get books in their hands. The reason I made these calendars so flexible and don’t suggest specific titles is that the number one way to get kids to enjoy reading is to let them read what they want. These calendars are prompts and can be used as a scaffold, not a strict checklist. Reading should be fun, and I hope these summer reading prompts in the form of summer reading calendars help make it even more fun this summer.
Each day you will find a fun prompt like “Read with a flashlight” or “Read a book about dinosaurs” which you can use to inspire your reading for the day. Click the link below to download the free summer reading prompts.
