I have been trying to focus my book activity posts on books that everyone seems to have but today I wanted to write about a book that you SHOULD have. Rex Wrecks It is one of my favorite children’s books, and more than that it’s one of the most useful teaching tools in my preschool classroom. Teaching children about self-control, restitution, and friendship all at once! I hope that these preschool activities will build on the lessons in this book as well as extend past them into other content areas. Below you will find activities that explore dinosaur and robot themes, and of course lots of tower building too!

THE BOOK
Rex Wrecks It by Ben Clanton is a must-read for preschool. It is all about a little dinosaur who just can not stop himself from knocking down other people’s towers. It is a great story because it empathizes with the children on all sides of this situation. As you read it to your students, focus on how it feels to have a block tower knocked down and the character’s faces. They are so sad. This will help as you progress through the year and deal with tower knocking down during free choice. It’s also good to spend some time looking at hard it is NOT to knock down a tower when it’s right in front of you. The book is an excellent look at self-regulation and resisting temptation to do something fun.

I love using Lego and Duplo with washi tape for learning letters and spelling with my son!
I also put washi tape on his matchbox cars to learn numbers 🙂 I wrote about it in my blog.
As for the sensory play, he loves freezing his dinosaurs in blocks of ice
