Hands-on letter recognition activities for preschool

Learn by doing. That’s a hands-on activity, and that’s exactly what your students will be doing with these hands-on letter recognition activities; they will be learning letters while making them! This is not a list of handwriting activities. Instead, this is a list of letter recognition activities for preschoolers all about building letters to develop recognition. If you are looking for handwriting activities, check out this game!

Young children learn best when they are active participants and when they are social. I suggest using these types of alphabet recognition activities during free choice or small groups, inviting children to work together and socialize while they do!

Hands-on ways to teach letter recognition

Work on fine motor skills and letter recognition at the same time with Wikki Stixx.
Write letters in shaving cream!
Make button letters
Make letters with playdough using cookie cutters or just by forming the letters.

Make sparkly letters with sequins!
Need something bigger? Try gems if the sequins are too small.
Stamp out letters in playdough or use letter stamps with ink pads and paper.
Or use letter cookie cutters to paint with letters.

Write letters in a writing tray.
Explore letter cookie cutters with slime!
Build letters and letter recognition skills by making Lego letters. Or try this magnetic letter-building set.
Trace letters with glue!
