Yesterday while spending too much money at Target, I bought a few things for my class in the dollar spot, including these dry erase building blocks. The package came with some fun literacy ideas but me, being me, had to come up with my own. I decided to turn these blocks into two different but straightforward math center number activities. My class of 3-year-olds is all about numbers right now, they have mastered all the number puzzles we have, beg to count in all different languages, and the circle time activities that work the best always include numbers. I like using an emergent curriculum, and one way I do that it to create and choose activities based on what my students have shown interest and ability in, you can learn more about emergent curriculum in this post. That’s what’s so rad about these blocks, maybe your class or kindergarteners are working on skip counting, in that case, write the numbers by 2 or 5! Not bad for a few bucks. If you want to see what else I bought pop over to my Instagram!
Number Blocks For Your Math Center
Gather your materials. You will need some blocks like these dry erase blocks from Target. You could use Duplo as I did in this post, but it’s expensive. This set comes with a dry erase marker, but I grabbed some sharpies when you want to erase just cover with dry erase and wipe. The sharpie will rub right off.
These blocks came with two dry-erase sides, so I decided to do a basic number recognition match for one side and quantities and number match on the other with dots.
I wrote out the numbers and the number word. I stacked the blocks together to write so that it would be generally spaced similarly.
Now the other side – dots for the quantities and numbers. I didn’t have the number words on this one because I wanted the students to focus very much on counting and matching them up.
Ready for my math center!
I love inexpensive materials like this because these basic concepts are so crucial for later learning, and I don’t want to hammer my students with them, instead offering many different fun and playful ways to learn is more my style.
